A child with a critical illness may be given hope by a wish. A wish inspires children facing unassailable challenges to endure their uncertain future by giving them something to anticipate. Many children have reported that their wish experience was the most memorable moment of their illness up to now because it provided them with something more than medicine—it provided them with a magical, secretive, and precious experience. In addition to curing illness, wishes embody belief, imagination, and courage to confront fears. That is why wishing wells are found in fairy tales, myths, and legends because they only exist there! Wishes are concerned with discovering what is critical in life. Wishes restore hope when there is little left. In times of darkness, they offer light. It is therefore not surprising that wishing wells appear in fictional settings. Sadly, we cannot produce magic wells where we can toss a coin, insert our desire, and get our wish fulfilled, although we can’t! Make a wish to give children hope and make their dreams come true. How to Help: Become a Wish SponsorChildren between the ages of 3 and 18 who have critical medical conditions and are at risk of dying are struggling to survive. They have been out of treatment for at least six months and have severe, lifelong conditions. These children are unable to receive treatment and have no future treatment options. We at Make-A-Wish believe that all of these children deserve the opportunity to dream big and experience joy. Every child who has been confronted with a medical problem knows they may not always control the situation they are in. When they go on a wish and are able to dream and imagine, they may regain control and feel empowered again.
